Puppy Manners and Socialization Modules

Why Puppy Training?

• Like all youngsters of any species, puppies need to learn about what is normal in their world in a safe and calm way.  Our program is set up to assist you in helping your dog feel safe and comfortable around dogs, other humans and other situations they may experience in their life.

• Build you and your dogs skill, relationship and trust of one another

• Activities in the program support the development of confidence and comfort

• Train your puppy for polite manners around yourself, other people and other dogs.

• Train your dog that grooming and other handling procedures, though not your favourite are safe

What is in the Modules Package

• 1 - online Introduction Session (we suggest doing this as your first Module)​

• 5 - In person Puppy Classes you can take in any order

• Online Office hours for your questions on puppy raising or puppy  training

• Class handouts and Support Materials

 

How do Puppy Modules Work

• Start Anytime  - puppies have age appropriate shots and have been in your home for 2 weeks.   The Introductions module can be completed earlier than your dog is able to attend in person classes.

• Schedule the components to fit into your life. 

  • Cancel and Reschedule if needed

• Credits in the package expire after 3 months

  • For Large puppies plan to complete the modules by the time your pup is 20 weeks old

  • For Smaller puppies plan to complete the modules by the time your pup is 23 weeks old

• Each class has some skill elements, some socialization elements and some handling for grooming, general care, and veterinary care.

Module - Introduction

• This module is online

  • Information on Puppy topics like biting,  socialization, alone time,  crate/confinement training

  • Time for questions on puppy training, socialization and handling

  • Information on booking and using the modules

Module 1 - Recalls

• Puppy Socialization : Other Puppies and their humans, Surfaces

• Skills: Recall, Attention to Handler, Name Response

• Handling: Collars and Collar Restraint

Module 2 - Leash Walking

• Puppy Socialization  : Other Puppies and their humans, Interactions with Novel objects and situations

• Skills:  Leash Walking, Positions (Sit, Down and Stand)

• Handling:  Equipment On your dog

Module 3 - Resource Guarding Prevention

• Puppy Socialization: Other Puppies and their humans

• Skills: Let’s Go, It's Yer Choice

• Handling :  Guarding Prevention - Safety around food bowls,  Feet and Nail handling
   

Module 4 - Leave It

• Puppy Socialization: Other Puppies and their humans,  People  objects like wheelchairs, skateboards, umbrellas…

• Skills: Beginning of Leave It,  Toy Exchange and Drop,  Leash pressure means move to my handler, Attention to Handler

• Handling:  Introduce Muzzles and Equipment

Module 5 - Body Awareness

• Puppy Socialization: Other Puppies and their humans,  Novel Movement and body awareness with baby agility

• Skills: Attention to Handler, Trade, Leave moving objects alone

• Handling:  A game of Veterinary Simon Says

Office Hours

• Office hours are available to you If you have puppy behaviour or training questions about raising and training your puppy

Why Is Puppy Socialization Important?

• The first 2-4 months of life for a puppy is the most important time for socialization,

  • puppy brains are primed for the introduction of  the novel world

  • We want our pets to feel comfortable in various scenarios that will be part of their life.

• Puppy Socialization should be done in a way where your pup feels safe and calm.   Socialization is primarly about awareness of normal and being ok with it.  It is not necessary for your dog to interact for an experience to contribute to puppy  socialization. 

• Socialization should encompass varieties of people, dogs, environments and situations
