Fall 2007
We have a busy fall schedule. Carolark is proud to present Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz and Kellie Snider presenting exciting new research and practical applications. The topics are understanding “Poisoned Cues” and the effect on behaviour. Reducing Aggressive Behaviour in Dogs: A New Approach to Rehabilitation for Aggression. The seminar is scheduled for Sat., Sept. 22nd and Sun., Sept. 23rd at the Richmond Fair Grounds Dining Hall, Richmond. The cost for the seminar is $225.00 taxes included.
Emotions in companion animals can be both endearing and perplexing. When emotional behaviours help to deepen our relationships with our animals, we are delighted, but when they take other forms such as “shutting down”, avoidance and particularly dangerous forms such as aggression, we are lost. By the time it becomes a problem, aggression is learned operant behaviour.
New research from the University of North Texas has demonstrated that we have been missing an important component in the development and maintenance of emotional behaviours in animals.
In this important seminar, Dr. Rosales-Ruiz and Ms. Snider will use demonstration, discussion and videos to explain the research that revealed how poisoned cue affect behaviour and how we can use an operant shaping procedure to switch off canine aggression and replace it with desirable behaviour. For more information about the presenters, registration and hotel information visit www.carolark.com/seminars

Carolark hosted the first TAGTeach workshop in Canada on June 9th and 10th.
TAG stands for Teaching with Acoustical Guidance and uses a sound marker to indicate correct performance. The TAG refers to the distinctive sound made to mark or “TAG” a moment in time. This sound becomes an acoustical binary message, a sort of “snapshot” that is quickly processed by the brain.
A TAG means “yes.” Absence of a TAG means “try again.” TAG points are the individual pieces of a desired response action or position. Students receive a TAG (the click sound) when the points are correctly performed.
The TAG points may vary from teacher to teacher and from student to student depending on the teaching style and the needs of the student. Positive please! TAGTeach utilizes a method of phrasing that presents exactly what the teacher/coach is asking of the student in a clearly positive manner. Remember, the TAG tells the student what they did right! “The TAG point is: touch your ear.” As the student touches her ear, she hears the TAG.

Carolark presented Dee Ganley author of “Changing People, Changing Dogs” for a two day workshop on June 16th
and 17th.

Here is what one conference participant had to say about the seminar:
“I was very impressed with the way Dee worked with the handlers and with the techniques she used with the dogs. Always patient, ready to ask or explain again, guiding them through.”
Dee Ganley’s book “Changing People, Changing Dogs” is available for purchase at the centre.
On The Road Again . . .

Carolyn traveled to Japan to teach this summer. Combining work and pleasure, she had an opportunity to teach a four day course to an Instructors’ group, in Chiba, just outside Tokyo. This was a follow up to a previous one and two day courses Carolyn has given in Tokyo and Miyazaki in the past four years. Staying at a “dog hotel” was interesting!
Special menus for dogs, doggy play area in the lobby, dog footwash stand outside the front door, tie up rings at all tables in the dining room and baskets of courtesy “accident towels” at all elevator stops, entrances and dining room, courtesy dog bowls and fresh ice water available throughout. Even a professional photographer was onsite to take pet pics.
A visit to the Peace memorial in Hiroshima and a few days visit with son and grandchildren in Osaka rounded out the trip.
Judy Miller, a licensed Rally Obedience judge and one of our instructors, judged Rally Obedience trials in St. Basil, Quebec and in Newburgh, Kingston this summer. The outdoor events proceeded rain or shine!
Back to school
Don’t forget to enroll your “fur kids” in a back to school
program such as a Good Manners class or Rally O class.

Rally O is a new team sport for dog/handler teams. Teams move through a course designed to test their basic skills of sit, down, stand and heel. A great way to have fun, practice the essentials and learn some new moves.
