About Carolyn
Clark
Carolyn
began teaching obedience classes in 1968 with the Bytown Dog Obedience
Club, Ottawa, Canada. In 1972 under the guidance of the late Milo
Pearsall, Carolyn helped design and implement puppy training classes
for the club. She has taught classes and given seminars and workshops
for community groups, breed clubs, Boards of Education, Community
Colleges, By-law Enforcement Officers and the Humane Society.
She has lived with and trained fish, birds and horses as well
as dogs and people. Some of her pets have been used in advertising.
She has trained other dogs for a role in a children's television
program. Carolyn has successfully competed in both the Obedience
and Breed rings earning titles first with a Toy Poodle and later
with Doberman Pinschers, including High In Trial placements and
Best Puppy in Show and Specialty Show wins.
Carolyn is a teacher
with a background in Psychology and Religion, and a graduate in
Pastoral Groupwork with families and groups. She continues to
take courses with top professionals in the dog and people training
field. Her interest in behaviour and the relationship of dog and
family has been influenced in particular by Dr. Ian Dunbar and
Karen Pryor. With a desire to improve life for dogs, owners and
the community they live in, Carolyn was inspired to turn her hobby
into a full time business, and in 1992 opened her own successful
school. Experience has helped her find the many small details
that make running pet classes effective and fun for all those
involved.
Carolark Mission
Statement
Our mission is
to provide the best training possible for people and their dogs,
emphasizing a positive people/pet relationship in an atmosphere
of care, friendliness, professionalism and respect for our clients,
their dogs and ourselves.
All of the staff
of the training centre are committed to helping owners enjoy that
special relationship, the bond, that can exist between owner and
dog.
The
Carolark Team
All
of our staff have come up through the classes, training their own dogs. In the course
of attending classes, all have been “bitten by the bug”, wanting to learn more
about behaviour and teaching and passing along the knowledge. After serving lengthy apprenticeships
including participation annually at educational seminars and workshops and maintaining their own dog’s
training, some go on to become senior trainers and some instruct classes.Audrey MacDonald is our Administrator and
Registrar. Audrey’s yellow Labrador pal, Winnie, sometimes accompanies her to
work. When not at work at the Centre,
Audrey has a private practice as a certified Reflexologist.
Jo-Ann Steele shares office duties part time and
teaches many of our daytime classes as well as the Thursday 6:30 p.m.
Good Manners 1 class. Jo-Ann’s
Shelties Jenny and Tina keep her household busy.
Cathie Buchanan teaches puppy classes on Sunday
afternoons and Wednesday evenings.
Cathie began assisting at Puppy Classes back in the days of rental space
at the Glen Cairn Community Centre and Belll High School. She has been teaching classes since our
opening here in 1992. Cathie raised
her Labrador, Casey, for his whole lifetime
following Carolark protocols. Now taking
over Casey's role is 3 year old black Labrador,
Piper.
Janet MacLachlan
teaches and assists Cathie on Wednesday evenings. Janet actually began
helping out at advanced classes in 1994 but over the last few years, Janet has
been spending more and more time with the puppies. Janet has trained her dogs
through all levels of obedience and competed in rally-o and agility. She continues to teach puppy
classes and works with the Australian Shepherd rescue group evaluating,
training and occasionally fostering a rescue.
Sandy Crosby took her first dog, Schatzie, to the Centre in the
Spring of 1993 and began assisting shortly thereafter. Sandy
became an instructor in January 1997. She currently is owned
by two Rotties. They are Bö and Belle, who will both turn
4 years old this summer. At the Centre Sandy teaches Level 1 on Saturday mornings, and
on Monday nights Level 1 and 2 and the Big Dog Class. Sue Galvin
has been working
as an assistant instructor
at Carolark for four and a half years.
You can find her there on Thursday evenings working with Jo-Ann Steele,
and Sandy Leach. Over the years she has
attended many workshops and seminars relating to obedience training, agility
and behavioral sciences, and she is registered with the Canadian Association of
Professional Pet Trainers.
